Biography of Angie Martinez

Angie Martinez has for long decided to release her own album. On August 17 2001, she finally came out with "The Up Close and Personal". Though the track failed to make a strong impression at radio, the record received mixed reviews from critics and Angie Martinez was accepted in the hip hop community. The album sold a very respectable 325,000 units. Her second album "Animal House", which was named after Martinez's own Production Company and recording posse, was released on August 21, 2002. The album was acclaimed by critics and fans, and was certified gold by the RIAA for sales of over 500,000 copies. Thus Angie Martinez made her Puerto-Rican community proud by becoming the first female hip-hop artist to ever receive an RIAA certified plaque of any kind.

As a finale to her musical career, she last appeared on a remix for label-mate Lil' Mo's track "Gangsta", and Nina Sky's hype single "Time to Go" and then announced her retirement from the recording industry to concentrate on other projects.

Angie Martinez entered the modeling world and here too she tasted success. She has modeled for Iceberg, Mercedes-Benz, Lucky Magazine, and Ecko by Marc Ecko and became the face of his label RED. Angie Martinez also worked with many street-casual hip-hop clothing lines, which promoted a more fashionable women's line.

On April 13 2004, Angie Martinez along with rapper Missy Elliott released the label 'RESPECT ME' that has a huge collection of Adidas, tracksuits, sneakers, hats, etc. The 'RESPECT ME' label has been a great hit with the company. Angie Martinez and Missy Elliott became the spokes models for the clothing line and appeared in promotional posters, billboards and ads. They together hosted the opening of the World's Largest Adidas store in New York City.

Angie Martinez is married to Tamir "Nokio" Ruffin of Dru Hill, and together they have a son Niko Ruffin {born 12 June 2003}.
