|
After this incident things changed for Martinez. Producers and executives of Emmis Broadcasting reviewed their options and Wendy Williams was relieved from her 2-6 pm time slot. The most coveted time slot in all of radio 2-6pm was given to Angie Martinez. She lined up eminent guests for the show, the likes of Bill and Hillary Clinton, Mary J. Blige, Oprah Winfrey, Foxy Brown, Jennifer Lopez, Aaliyah, Tupac Shakur, Jay-Z, Larry King, Lil' Kim, Dr. Phil and Naomi Campbell. Soon the show became a major hit in all of New York and from 1996 to 2000 the show was ranked #1 in the Arbitron Ratings. Angie Martinez won accolades for her efforts and was dubbed “The Voice of New York".
Her popularity at the Radio had stretched to Television too. In 2002, HBO hired Angie Martinez to host a Letterman-Leno-esque late night talk show entitled "Stretch". She designed the program in such a way to give an intimate look into the celebrity preparation. The show became a success and caught the attention of television producer Simon Fuller. He immediately signed her for American Idol as the fourth judge. After a couple of days on the show Angie Martinez backtracked saying, she is too sensitive to crush the dreams of wannabe Idols by rejecting them and that she cannot take it to heart when aspiring singers, affected by her decision, break down in tears with their families comforting them. Angie Martinez appeared on Ultimate Hustler season finale with show creator and friend Damon Dash on BET. She also appeared for FUSE Network, VH1 and MTV. |
